The definitive and short answer is that if you are not a card-carrying member of the American Federation of Musicians, you are not working on Broadway...no matter how good you may play. Now, there are some smaller regional theaters who sometimes will hire non-union musicians for shows, but there aren't enough of those places to keep you going for very long...and you have to travel to find them. If you do have a card, then I would contact the union reps at Local 802, and let them know what your plans are. They may be of assistance to you in making your transition from the Boston scene to NYC a bit easier.
