A. 1st law of thermodynamics> dQ = dU + dW dQ = + 40 J (heat in is positive) dW = + 10 J (work done by the system) change in interbnal energy (dU) = dQ - dW = 40 - 10 = + 30 J dU = positive > increase in internal energy === 2) dQ = dU + dW dQ = ? (heat exchange) dW = + 30 J (work done by the system) change in interbnal energy (dU) = - 150 J (decreased) dQ = dU + dW = - 150 + 30 = - 120 J >>>*** corrected - dQ > means heat lost by the system> negative (dU) means cooling of system > for that heat must go out!!
