What should I charge a musician to use my photograph for his album cover?
Q. I have not sold my artwork for commercial use in the past, but it's pretty good and I'm not sure what to charge for its use on a CD cover. The musician is a fairly well known local artist in Vancouver, BC. Thanks.

A. My feeling is that you could charge the band $200 for limited use. The best money I ever made from an album cover was a indefinite use fee of $50 plus a percentage of each LP sold. I still make $10 a week from that deal made in1986!

How do I become a professional musician in a major orchestra?
Q. I have been playing the cello in school for five years, but I've never had a private lesson. And I'm 16. Is that too old to think about a music career? Any other advice? Is there a way to be a part-time musician as music is not my only passion?
Asked by Baljinnyam D - Thu Mar 27 15:50:54 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Ok I cannot really help you as I don't either play an instrument or practice music. But what I have to add is interesting. It is about la vie des fourmis. Listen. My cousin is a real musician, he plays the piano, the flute, aims to become conductor of orchestra and also, il aime les jolies chevres. Thus he's now learning russian and german I think because there happen major events. Especially in Vienna. Oui l'Autriche quel beau pays tout de meme !! And the most important thing is that once he is conductor, he'll visit me in my farm, where there will be ducks and cows and chickens and goats (en fait j'aime pas tant les chevres, aussi jolies chevres soient-elles, j'prefere etudier la vie des fourmis et leur habitat : quel beau pays !) ... !! What is the average salary of a musician?
Q. I mean any kind of musician. Everything from symphony to pop singer. Thanks. =] Ok, how about I put it this way... Can I make a living being a musician? I don't mind waiting tables along with it, I just want to preform and probably teach.
Asked by Shortwolf - Sat Nov 28 00:36:48 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Most people who play music don't earn money for it. A huge portion of the people who earn some money at it make more money doing something else. That is, they might get a little bit for singing in a choir, but they wait tables because the singing just doesn't provide enough. The top-end classical musicians (e.g. Yo Yo Ma) probably earn $150,000 per year. Top-end rock stars and country stars can earn in the 10s of millions. But MOST musicians earn bubkis, zilch, the big goose egg.

How can I get a job as a musician for singers and artists?
Q. I have been playing he piano and the guitar for several years now and I would like to start working as a musician for singers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A. Become a studio musician first and earn your stripes there. I hope you can sight read music though because they won't accept anyone less. You also need to have a large selection of instruments so you can adjust to specific songs and sounds. They won't provide these things for you. It's a hard job to land my friend.

How does learning a new instrument make you a better musician, if you already play an instrument?
Q. How does learning a new instrument make you a better musician, if you already play an instrument? How does the process of learning a new instrument inform/develop one's musicianship?
Asked by ANswER ?? - Sun Jan 11 18:08:00 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You may discover another instrument you enjoy equally or even more. I know several people who started out with one instrument, but decided to try another one, and did a permanent switch. I know one person that played the Alto Sax all through school. she went on to university (music degree) and now teaches flute and Saxophone, and plays the banjo in a band. I personally enjoyed trying other instruments because of the type of music they usually play, or the sound they made.

I want to enter into the music industry but not as a musician. Where do I start?
Q. I have finally figured out what I want to do as a career and that is to work in the music industry. I LOVE music and would very much like to be apart of the entertainment industry. I'm not much of a musician (I can sing a little) so I would rather just work for a record label or something. Problem is I'm about to enter into my senior year of college as an accounting major and have absolutely no connections in the music industry. What do I do? Where do I start?

Does the brain of a musician function in a dramatically different way than a non-musician?
Q. I've always been curious. You see many moody, disturbed, and just artistic musicians. I guess this goes for artists as well. Creative people. Is there something up with the brain of a musician? I play piano and am beginning bass. The only notable thing is that my dreams are full of music. Other than that, are there any differences physically that are known? Thanks in advance!! ~Indie G

A. I have to believe it works differently. The process of learning music, especially writing or composing it (as opposed to reciting it) uses the brain in a completely different way than other activities would. Most musicians tend to approch conflict or problems in a way most other people would not immediately think of. But please don't confuse it with intelligence. While there are plenty of very smart players around, there are waaayy too many stupid artists and musicians out there.

A. Well one if you write your own music do not post it on youtube... people can and will take it and call it there own and get famous off of your work... to become an actor and you dont live in LA then i would start with music, and then once you are famous then you can go for a couple movies... but to become a famous musician you need to creat a demo. then find good recorded lables and then send in your demo and see if they want to set up a contract with you... demo should have 3-10 songs and it is great if its your own work cuz then they will want you more cuz they dont have to pay for a songwriter or a guitar player...GOOD LUCK!!! contact me when you get there!

How much music practice does the average musician do?
Q. From what I've gathered, most of my friends who are doing their grade 8 piano, like me, practise a few hours a day. I don't, I practsie maybe half an hour a day if that? And I've done my grade 8 oboe and did maybe half an hour a day and I got distinction, so I'm wondering- do most musician practise for hours on end or are my friends over-compensating. I'm probably just woefully lazy.

A. They might just enjoy it more than you. It may be a skill thing, but when I play my guitar, I will play and 4 hours later realize that I need to get back to work, or do my errands, etc. It's not that I am necessarily practicing on purpose. I just lose track of time.

Can a famous musician just up and quit their recording career?
Q. I say this because I never seen a musician or heard of one that quits their career and move onto something else. Most of them stay in the spotlight until they're dead. Like for example, I can't see somebody like Madonna quitting and just retiring off of her money. And if she does, I can still see her trying to stay in the media spotlight. I'm asking this for a book I'm writing.
Asked by Mamabunny - Wed Sep 24 01:45:43 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Well, it depends on what is in their contract, if they break that contract they can be sued. After their contract is up they can do whatever it is they want. I think musicans stay in the spotlight because that is all that they know. Many do not have anything else to fall back on.

How do famous musician's UNRELEASED songs get leaked onto places like Limewire and torrent websites?
Q. I just want to know how unreleased songs get onto torrent downloading places? Who releases them and how without the musician knowing?
Asked by Truth - Tue Mar 31 18:32:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sometimes the musician does it themselves. They call it leaks, but when a song is like recorded/mixtape'd/tags-o -glory, it gets the name (Blah Blah Blah) [NOT CDQ/TAGS]. Then to get the CDQ, fully mastered, ect., the artist put the song out there themselves.

How Does a Musician get Selected to Play for a Solo Artist on Tour?
Q. I mean, I understand a band going on tour on their own and stuff like that. But how does a musician (guitarist, drummer, etc) gets to play for solo artist while they're on tour? A. Solo artists usually have regular back up bands that they work with all the time. Often, the same musicians who play on their recordings also go with them on tour to back them up on stage. This obviously makes a lot of sense, since these musicians already know all of the artist's songs. If for some reason, some of the musicians who played on the record are unable to tour with the artist, the artist will have to find other musicians to replace them for the tour. Famous solo artists are like anyone else when it comes to putting together a band, or hiring a replacement musician. They might start by just calling other musicians they already know, whose playing they like, and offer them the job. Or they might ask their friends and… [cont.]
