When I played I was usually defense too and at first I didn't like it much either because I felt like I wasn't in on the action because I wasn't able to try to score goals. I realized though that defense is a great position to play with a lot of responsibility. The reason your coach put you in that position could be for any number of reasons including that maybe he thinks you have a more defensive style and also you could have a good build for a defender. If you want to improve in defense I would suggest watching videos of professional defenders and trying to get some skills from watching what they do. A good defender marks their opponent diligently.
