Do singers use special machines to sing high registers?
Q. I know studio "click" tracks and other shenanigans (Pro Tools) are used to clean up bad pitch but I've always wondered if there's some sort of in-line "processor" singers use (especially live) to sing octaves into the stratosphere.
Asked by unknown - Fri Aug 24 13:55:31 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Unfortunately, the last two people who answered are wrong. It's common for many artists to use pitch correcting devices through the audio console to help them sound better. They also use their voices on track, played back from a computer through the audio console to make them sound fuller or replace their voice all together during tough dance routines, etc.

why do choral singers often faint while performing?
Q. i've seen some videos and i heard of some cases myself, of choral singers who faint while performing. any scientifical answer for this? or maybe supposals?

A. those who have answered with locked knees and improper breathing are right. When we lock our knees, we cut down the circulation to our legs and lower body, where most of the strength of singing ought to come from. Without that sort of body balance, it's no wonder the brain does a quick shut-down-and-restart maneuver like fainting. Locking your knees also throws your whole body out of alignment, so , even if you are thinking you are breathing properly, it's not effective enough. Yes, adrenaline and endorphins are produced while singing ( part of what makes singing so much fun)but neither of these two sorts of natural body chemicals will cause the faints. it helps to remind yourself to be springy at the knees, and occasionally bend or flex… [cont.]

How come some singers sound better than others?
Q. Why do some male singers sound better when they sing in their falsetto than others do? I can't seem to get a decent tone. Rob halford had a cool high voice. What can I do to make it sound better?
Asked by Buckin Bob - Sat Jan 3 16:49:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That last comment was not accurate. You don't need to have talent too sing. If you have the talent you just got lucky because you don't need to work hard. Your voice is just like an instrument and any one can play an instrument, it just takes time, patience and practice. Some singers are better than others because they are born with talent but also there are a lot of singers who have worked very hard to train their vocals to sound that way. If you practice warm ups and vocal exercises on a regular basis you will slowly notice the change in pitch, tone, vibrato and you will eventually reach those octave levels you want to be able to reach. It takes a lot of time and practice though, I have been singing for 5 years now and do vocals… [cont.]

What should two alternating singers do onstage but can't play instruments?
Q. My band and I are playing for half an hour. Seven songs, two duets and two singers. Neither of us know how to play instruments, so what does one do while the other sings? We can't just hang around onstage not doing anything! What do we do?! Help please! I'm one of the singers. I'm doing four songs, and my friend is singing five. Two are duets, so those two are okay. Ironically enough, both of us only know how to play the flute.

How much do opera singers in lead and supporting roles make?
Q. I am trying to find out what opera singers in lead and supporting roles make in metropolitan areas. If you have any links to this kind of information, it would help me a lot! Thanks!
Asked by SAH - Mon Aug 27 12:26:36 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. all of those things matter in pricing- how famous you are, whether you are paid weekly/per performance, how big the part is, what the budget of the opera company is... for example: I was singing a supporting role at Lyric Opera of Chicago and made the AGMA weekly rate during rehearsals and performances (It was about $1750 a week at the time), but have also made per performance 2K-3K - and in those contracts you don't get paid during rehearsals. For leading roles in companies like Chicago and SF the least you could make for a lead would be something like 2K per up to 14K per.. depending on the role and your star-power! Also depending on how long in advance they are hiring, how common the show is, etc. Each opera company has it's own… [cont.]

How do you find committed singers and dancers for a non-profit group?
Q. I am a part of a non-profit performing arts group. We're all volunteer and we perform to benefit & raise money for the community around us. Now, my question, though we have a cast of 50 we are really low on males, both dancers & singers. How do you find the performers that want to perform, even though they're not getting paid? Any Ideas?
Asked by LinnyS - Fri Mar 16 16:23:51 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is always more difficult to find men for community theater endeavors than women. And even more difficult to find talented ones. There are plenty of female-heavy plays and productions out there. It is also a common practice to have females play male roles (Shakespeare in reverse). Starting out this way will earn your group a reputation and soon you will find that more people (including men) will be interested in joining in. It's a good idea to socialize with your audience AFTER each performance -show how much you can be to be around.

When and why did British singers start using American accents?
Q. It seems that most British pop and rock singers use an American, or at least Mid-Atlantic, accent. How long ago did this trend start, and why? Anyone know? I think its quite strange, though not necessarily a bad thing.

A. Become a studio musician first and earn your stripes there. I hope you can sight read music though because they won't accept anyone less. You also need to have a large selection of instruments so you can adjust to specific songs and sounds. They won't provide these things for you. It's a hard job to land my friend.
